Two legends at the start of the Algarve Marathon
The first Algarve Marathon 2026 has Carlos Lopes as patron and Aurora Cunha as matron, two names with world-class records who shaped the history of Portuguese athletics.

Portugal's first Olympic champion
Carlos Lopes
Carlos Lopes, born in Viseu on 18 February 1947, is the first Portuguese athlete to win an Olympic gold medal. He won the marathon at the 1984 Los Angeles Games and, the following year, broke the world record for the distance in Rotterdam.
From Vildemoinhos, in Viseu, he established himself as one of the most complete distance runners of his generation, shining on the track, on the road and in cross country. Racing for Sporting, he was a ten-time national cross-country champion, a discipline where, on form, he was almost unbeatable, and where he became a three-time world champion.
His greatest triumph came on 12 August 1984. At 37, the oldest in the field, he won the Olympic marathon in Los Angeles with an Olympic record of 2:09:21, a mark that stood until 2008. It was Portugal's first ever Olympic gold. Less than a year later, in Rotterdam, he set the marathon world record at 2:07:12, becoming the first man to run the distance under 2h08.

She started running at 15 and soon broke national track records. She spent most of her career with Futebol Clube do Porto, excelling in cross country, middle distance and distance running. Between 1976 and 1985 she set dozens of national records, becoming Portugal's first national record holder at 5,000 and 10,000 metres.
The road was her greatest stage. She became world champion in Madrid (1984), Gateshead (1985) and Lisbon (1986), the last before a huge crowd in the capital. She also won the World Cup 10,000 m in 1985 and, in the marathon, triumphed in Paris and Tokyo (1988), Chicago (1990) and Rotterdam (1992). She represented Portugal at three Olympic Games.
